    Hi all,

I am writing to say thank you for the AR Sandbox developers. Thank you!

We have been hacking the AR Sandbox and will have it and the original version in an exhibition called “California”, opening on November 10th in the Design Museum in Helsinki. More information about the exhibition is available in here:

    California: Designing Freedom

And here is, not yet language checked, description of the installation:

    +Andscape – augmented reality sandbox

+Andscape is an extension of the augmented reality (AR) sandbox developed in University of California (UC Davis 2015). The original AR sandbox was designed to create topographic models with sand. When one shapes the sand, a motion capture camera perceives changes in the shape and the image projected to the surface changes accordingly. Furthermore, the application comes also with a virtual rain where the water rains and flows in the landscape.

+Andscape is an AR sandbox designed for small children. The installation is design study of pedagogical environment using AR. With +Andscape children can explore digital world through touch and embodied experience. Children are able to paint and to create soundscapes by digging and piling the sand.

For children, play and artistic practice are embodied ways to understand and learn about the world. Digital and computational world is often invisible and beyond tactile exploration, hidden as software code, algorithms, pixels and bites. In most of the cases it is manifested only as surfaces and interfaces, in which tactile experiences are diminished to clicks and swipes.

With +Andscape we can explore new ways to bring digital world into children’s creative grasp. +Andscape makes it possible to touch, to squeeze, to mold, to pile and to dig digitally augmented material. With the AR sandbox we explore the pedagogical affordances of a playground where children can dig, build, make sounds, document and share their digital creations with others.

+Andscape installation is produced in co-operation with City of Helsinki (Insights into Early Childhood Education project) and Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Concept design Jaana Brinck & Teemu Leinonen; Execution Labbers Oy Niklas Pöllönen & Jason Selvarajan. Acknowledgements for the participant children and educators in the design workshops.

The Augmented Reality Sandbox was developed by the UC Davis W.M. Keck Center for Active Visualization in the Earth Sciences (KeckCAVES, http://www.keckcaves.org), supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. DRL 1114663. We will post some images and videos online as soon as the installation is up and running. We of course will will also release our source code. Furthermore, if you happen to be in Helsinki in November 2017 – March 2018, please contact me and I will take you to see the installation and the exhibition.
