Hi all, I’m new to this project. I saw a working sandbox at Science City in Kansas City recently and felt like trying to create one for the school where my wife teaches. I’m trying to source all hardware that meets the required specs as cheaply as possible. If anyone can give me some quick feedback on my selected hardware, I’d very much appreciate it!

    Projector: ViewSonic PA503W – $379.99 on Amazon

      Type: DLP Lamp
      Resolution Type: WXGA (1280×800)
      Resolution: 1280 x 800
      Brightness (Lumens): 3,600 ANSI
      Throw Distance: 3.28 – 36.02 ft / .99 – 10.98 m
      Throw Ratio: 1.55~1.70
      Keystone: Vertical (+/- 40°)
      Lens: 1.1x optical zoom

I’m having trouble sourcing a projector that meets the specs for under $500 (my goal is under $400). The recommended BenQ projector and its currently available successors are all over $500, and I’m trying to keep this affordable for the school. The ViewSonic PA503W one MIGHT fit the bill, but the throw ratio is 1.55, and the aspect ratio is 16:10.

If I built the box at a 16:10 ratio (e.g., 40″ x 25″) and raised the projector to the right height, would this work? And would it work well? This projector calculator says the distance for a 40″ by 25″ sandbox would need to be 5′ 2″ (1.57 m) at 1.10x zoom.

    Computer Hardware

      Processor: AMD FX-4130 Zambezi Quad-Core 3.8 GHz
GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1060 3GB Refurbished (enough VRAM for enough for smooth operation?)
      RAM: 6 GB DDR2 RAM

Thanks so much for your time, and for any feedback you can provide!

Can’t seem to edit my original post, so I’ll reply here. I found another projector that might work better than the ViewSonic PA503W, because it has a slightly shorter throw ratio and a 4:3 aspect ratio rather than 16:10. The Epson VS350 has a 4:3 aspect ratio, 1024×768, 3,300 lumens, and notably, a throw ratio of 1.48 to 1.77 (versus the ViewSonic’s 1.55-1.70). According to the projector calculator, it would need to be mounted 4′ 11″ (1.5 m) from the sandbox at 1.20x zoom.

The projector is also relatively affordable, at $399 new on Amazon. Does anyone with experience have any input on whether or not it would work well?
