    Working on SARndbox with lower end hardware spec’s.
    As a result, the fluid simulations cause framerates to drop substantially.
    Without fluid, the contours react with slightly more delay than desired – but much more reasonably so than with fluid.
    Is there any effective way of simplifying the shading functions or fluid simulations to accommodate such component limitations?

    The only way without completely replacing the fluid dynamics simulation algorithm would be to reduce the size of the water simulation grid, trading off resolution for performance. Add -wts <width> <height> to the command line. By default, <width> and <height> are 640 and 480, respectively. You could try 240 and 180, for example, for a 7x speed-up, or even 160 and 120 for 16x.
