    Hi.
I am trying to build a sandbox fro college. I need to keep the cost down. Is it possible to use i5 instead of i7. If using an i5 will I have to turn off water? That defeats the purpose. Right?

We used an Intel Core i5-4690K Processor in a recent box build. It provides more than enough speed to run the water feature with no lag. It’s important to note that not all i7’s are better than i5’s. (In fact some i5’s may be better for this application) There are many different models of each, just keep an eye out for core speeds, number of cores and cache sizing.

The water simulation is entirely run on the GPU and mostly independent of CPU performance.

We generally recommend Core i7 CPUs because most of our software is aggressively multi-threaded and benefits from more cores and hyperthreading.

But I think the AR Sandbox uses four threads at most, so it should be fine on Core i5 CPUs.

    Just finished our build.

    Intel Core i5-4690k
    8GB RAM
    Nvidia GTX-960 (4GB)
    Linux Mint

All running perfectly with no lag.

    Andy
