If you are looking for the portability of a laptop you might consider a used Lenovo Y50-70. It has an Nvidia GTX960m GPU and its performance driving the sandbox is very good. I just checked eBay and used, they are going for about $600. The only downside from personal experience (I use the touch version on a daily basis) it is not the most robustly built laptop out there so if buying used, be aware of that. Also, make sure it has the GTX960 not the older GTX860 that goes for a hundred dollars less. My $0.02, keep or discard.

It is just normal play sand, just heavily wetted. After sculpting the sand, I spray water on it which generates the clumping effect. Adds texture to the sand’s appearance. We go through a lot of water in a day when the sandbox is on display.

The capture software just uses pictures taken with normal cameras. I took the pictures with my iPhone as it was the only camera I had when I decided to do this little experiment. I was curious how it would come out given the subject is essentially self-illuminated. I wanted to see what effect the projector lighting would have on the model. When you “fly” over the terrain, no shadow is cast onto the sand! You can look straight down at the model in ways you can’t in real life.

As I said, the outcome from my experiment was a pleasant surprise. I’m thinking of doing some screen recording of flythroughs and turn it into a YouTube video.

We have ours set up using a Benq MW632ST and have no issues with it. It is mounted more or less at the same height as the Kinect and projects 1024×768 perfectly. I asked our IT dept to get one “closest to the MX631ST” and we got this one. Bumble bee principle in action.

I’m now building one for home use (my hi-tech zen garden as it were) so I’m on the hunt for something less expensive. I’m very interested in seeing what others have successfully used that’s less than $500 as it is coming out of my pocket this time!

Add me to the list of folks interested in adding CAD (Computer Asisted Digging) to the AR Sandbox. Actually, this has been a subject of some casual discussions. A few unsolicited comments (hope Mr. Kreylos is listening!):

    1) Provide a z-axis exaggeration scale especially when modeling real world terrain.
    2) Consider adding contour lines over the “dig here, fill there” color coding. This gives some feel for the how much sand needs to be shifted. An simpler feature might be a fixed grid so the “digger” knows how much to pick up from one square and dump on another.
    3) Provide a “check” feature so that when the “digger” is close to the desired layout highlight the areas that need refining.
    4) Impmenenting multiple passes where the projected colors direct a rough layout first then the more refined layout once the major cut/fills are met.
    5) have the ability to overlay some textual information identifying the elevation values over the projected image at different points (ie, tgt:20cm, curr:5cm.) This would be especially helpful when displaying the projected image on a second monitor (we use such a monitor to display the “plan view” of the terrain)

As I said, my $0.02, keep or discard.

Our AR Sandbox was built by three colleagues for the purpose of educating children’s groups from grade school up about our users and what they do. Visits occur several times a month with groups such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, STEM groups, Future City teams, etc.
